D. B. Beardsley[1]

Ode To Be A Beardsley

oh to be a Beardsley and from our family,
oh to have the Beardslee name or in your ancestry,
oh to be a Beardsley and have this special bond,
a kindred understanding on both sides of the pond,
oh to be a Beardslee wherever you may be,
by name or by blood, you're part of our family
Anthony Beardsley June 5, 2012

Quote from an Elder Beardsley

You may find the following quite fitting for those of us who are interested in Beardsley family history.
Old age induces, or should induce reflection. No man, with intellect, of mere ordinary grade, but looks back with deep interest to the past, and with intense solicitude, for the future. How can it be otherwise? It is a principle of our nature, stamped deep and lasting by Deity himself, that induces a retrospect. We delight to retrace our steps, from childhood to youth, and so on to old age. To call up visions, and recollections of the past. To associate in our minds, those who were once with us, who were dear to us, and who have long since been called away. "Reminiscences; personal and other incidents; early settlement of Otsego County; notices and anecdotes of public men; judicial, legal, and legislative matters; field sports; dissertations and discussions", by author Levi Beardsley, dated 1852; third great grand-uncle of Beardsley researcher Nick Dann

What this is :

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the Beardsley surname and the variants of this name. While the study is currently very U.S. centric it is NOT intended as such, we strongly encourage non-U.S. researchers to add to our knowledge of this surname. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect. For more information please contact the project leader(s), John Beardsley at jgdb@twcny.rr.com, or Nick Dann at nfdann@comcast.net. Feel free to add categories to your profiles, add your questions to the bulletin board, add details of your name research, etc, etc, etc.

Not the bit least, we want to pay homage to our Beardsley/Beardslee forebears, lest they fade into some local death statistic.

{I'd be thrilled to have co-leaders in this project! .....John}

Name Variants

  • The obvious: Beardsley and Beardslee !
  • Connecticut records show variations such as Bardsle and Berdslee. [2]
  • A recent discovery reveals that a Beardsley family from Athens, Ohio, changed the spelling to Berzley. See Francis Asbury Beardsley.
  • Please feel free to let us know of any additional variants or purposeful new spellings.

Relationships or Other Help Sought

Lester C. Beardsley, 1831-1911. Need his father ! Contact Nick Dann. We've established the identity of his mother.
James Beardsley, 1765 - 1825 and James Beardsley, c1766. Please see the Research Notes for the father, Josiah Beardsley. The first James profile has marriage and children reflected from IHB, pg 211; the second from Holt's record, #336, which differs. Both James are temporarily shown as the son of Josiah and Margery (Sackett) Beardsley, but, obviously, only one can be correct. The discrepancy has gone on to many, many public trees, mostly reflecting the IHB information. So, Wikitreers, it's up to us to sort it out! Contact Nick Dann. Once sorted out, the correct son James should be retained; the other modified to reflect his correct parentage, and this and associated notes expunged.
Theodore Beardsley, 1851 - 1892. His Findagrave memorial (#124226687, Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown IL), as well as 1880 US Census, also Prophetstown, enumerates his birthplace as Germany or Prussia. Shows he is married to Ann Besler, also born in Germany. Who is he? Who are his parents? Was he really a 'Beardsley", or had his name been changed? Help please! Contact Nick Dann or John Beardsley.
Race car driver Ralph Edward Beardsley, 1891 - 1920. His mother and father have been identified, as well as his grandfather. Need help with the remainder of Ralph's ancestry Contact Nick Dann.
Daniel Beardsley (1752 - 1836). Holt has him the son of Robert Beardsley and Hannah Chauncey, and married to Anne Hawley. But, in Ancestors and Descendants of Samuel French, Pg. 264., Daniel Beardsley (sp. Beardslee) is the son of Samuel Beardsley and Anne French, showing him born 1752, and married, 1777, to Anna Hawley. HELP!
A researcher and descendant of Samuel S. Beardsley has convincing evidence that this Samuel may be the son of Othni Beardsley. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated in proving this line. Contact either John D. Beardsley or Nick Dann.
And another James, James Allen Beardslee, husband of Sarah Bliss. No information has been found connecting James to his parents. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated in connecting this line. Contact either John D. Beardsley or Nick Dann.
Beardsley-2440 Fred Beardsley. Believe his parents MAY be James and Emily Beardsley, found in 1870 US Census, Union, Erie, Pennsylvania. Need proof, and if this is his parents, need his father's lineage, as well. Contact Nick Dann.
Beardsley-3407 Charles Beardsley. Seeking his ancestry. Is it possible that this is the same person an Beardsley-3064 Charles Beardsley ? Common denominator seems to be the connection to Allegany County, New York. Can anyone offer any clues? Contact either John D. Beardsley or Nick Dann.

Citing Sources

See Census Records, below.

Please Note:

References to other family trees at Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org or other online sites are NOT considered proper documentation, please do not add these as sources, and do not remove the unsourced tag from profiles citing only these trees.
These intended 'sources' often come from GEDCOM uploads. It's perfectly OK to upload GEDCOMs as it helps deliver raw data, but proper source citations are preferred. As profiles are edited, don't be surprised if 'sources' citing Ancestry, Rootsweb, or FamilySearch trees are expunged and (hopefully) replaced with proper sources.

Use of the Beardsley Crest

. . . . From the earliest period of English history up to the time of the Puritan revolution, the right to "bear arms" or use armorial insignia in any form was strictly regulated by the law of the land. The Heralds appointed by the Crown were delegated to grant the privilege to bear such arms, and were also empowered to prevent unauthorized individuals from exercising such rights under the penalty of the law. These Heralds in their periodic "Visitations" of the various counties of England, exercised their legal functions, and kept recorded in the archives of their office the rolls of those entitled to bear arms, together with a full heraldic description of the arms thus borne, and in many instances the full pedigrees of the individual entitled to bear them. The manuscript records of these periodic "Visitations" have in many instances been placed before the public in printed duplicates of the original, giving the record of those in certain counties at the time of that particular " Visitation " who by the Heralds were recognized as having the indisputable right to use such armorial insignia. For the purposes of this article it is necessary to refer to only one of such published Visitation, viz.: "The Visitations of Sussex in 1530 and in 1633/4", published by the Harleian Society of England.
. . . . The right to bear arms was the official recognition of an existing aristocracy, and it was natural that at the breaking out of the Puritan reforms in England, the recognition of this aristocratic privilege should spring into some disrepute among those who swayed the destinies of the land at that time. It followed from this condition of affairs that during the time of the Puritan upheaval and subsequent thereto up to the present time the same rigid scrutiny of the use of armorial insignia in England has not existed as it did exist previous to that period. However, the right to bear arms exists by law today in England as it did in the past, even though the transgression of that same law is not punished now by the severe penalties in force before the Puritan revolution.
. . . . If a family in England can trace its origin to one to whom the right to bear arms has been duly granted by the properly constituted authority, then the members of that family, subject to the laws of Heraldry, can make use of such arms as an inalienable right granted unto them by the law.
. . . . For many years subsequent to the discovery of this country the larger part thereof which was settled was under the dominion of the English crown, and hence the laws of England were the fundamental laws of this land. An individual in this land, therefore, at that time belonging to an English family entitled to bear arms, was. from the fact that he was a subject of England, entitled likewise to make such use of his Heraldic inheritance as were permitted by the then well-known laws of Heraldry.
. . . . . Such was the legal status of Heraldry in this country up to the time of the Declaration of Independence and the subsequent adoption of the Constitution of the United States. The very essence of the Constitution of this country is repugnant to the fostering of an aristocratic class, and such was the spirit of the founders of our fundamental law that by specific wording of the Constitution barriers were erected to prevent the establishment in the future of any officially recognized aristocracy. Hence any one who swears allegiance to the United States, loses by his oath any legal right he may have had in another country to a recognized use of Heraldic insignia. The use of such insignia however, has not been specifically prohibited by the law of the land, and hence its use has continued in force here by the toleration of a government indifferent to a usage which it feels is of too little importance to materially affect the serious underlying democracy of the people at large.
. . . . . The knowledge that certain families in the United States are descended in direct line from families of foreign origin entitled to bear arms is perhaps a matter of justified pride on the part of the representatives of the branches of these families who are now citizens of the United States. The study of family history of recent years has become so popular, that the desire for knowledge of blood right to use armorial insignia has increased so that it has become desirable to ascertain with as much accuracy as possible the amount of evidence existent in support of the blood (not legal) right of an individual in this country to make use of the heraldic insignia conferred in the past by law on an individual bearing his family name.

Note about use of the "Beardsley Family Crest": The Family Crest (commonly called a Coat of Arms; more properly Armorial Bearing ) used and described as "the" official crest for this family has not been documented as being connected to the American Beardsley/Beardslee family descended from William the immigrant, at least not to the best of current knowledge. That said, it is used as an identifier for this family one name study simply because it is so commonly referred to. If anyone can connect this family officially to this or any family crest please bring it to our attention.'

Beardsley/Beardslee DNA Project:
https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/beardsley-beardslee/about
https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Beardsley_Beardslee?iframe=yresults

Our Beardsley/Beardslee surname DNA project is always looking to recruit members of the family to test their Y-DNA. Taking the Y-DNA test of at least 37 markers will help to verify the various lineages of the families. Please contact me, John Beardsley-386 at jgdb@twcny.rr.com if you have any questions about the various DNA tests, genetic genealogy or interest in joining the DNA project. While our DNA project is primarily intended to trace the Beardsley surname {thus Y-DNA}, we also accept MTDNA (female lineages) and autosomal (FTDNA's Family Finder, AncestryDNA or 23 and Me) tests into the project.

What we know :

DNA testing of descendants of the immigrant William Beardsley-17 has indicated that Beardsleys from this lineage belong to Haplogroup I, subclade L1483 , or I-L1483 {as of 2022}. This was determined through two Big Y tests and subsequent testing of the L1483 SNP by other members of the project. I am not aware of any studies which have detailed how and where subclade L1483 originated, however so far only descendants of William have tested positive for this SNP indicating that it may be a branch defining marker. Non-descendants of William have tested positive for I-BY4637 (which is the parent SNP of L1483).

It is believed that the I haplogroup originated in the European area around Belgium or northern Germany after the Ice Age, and migrated into the British Isles as part of the Viking raids. Once established in England the greatest populations of the L338 subclade of haplogroup I, or at least the subsection of L338 that contained the early Beardsley ancestors, settled in the areas between Ireland and London.

Today the largest populations of I-L338 are found in the United States, England and New Zealand. BY4637 is a subclade of L338.

The following link will take you to the public page of the Beardsley/Beardslee DNA project. Currently we are sorting members according to their first five generations. As more members join the project, the sorting method may change in order to provide the most useful information to members. It is hoped that we will be able to connect the members from each of the main populations to one another at some point.

Surname: Beardsley or Beardslee

  • See Forebears 'Beardsley'
  • This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a locational name from some minor, unrecorded or now "lost" place, believed to have been situated in Nottinghamshire or Leicestershire where the name is most popular. An estimated seven to ten thousand villages and hamlets are known to have disappeared since the 12th Century, due to such natural causes as the Black Death of 1348, in which an eighth of the population perished, and to the widespread practice of enforced "clearing" and enclosure of rural lands for sheep pastures from the 15th Century onwards.
  • The placename is believed to derive from the genitive case of the Olde English pre 7th Century byname "Beard", from the vocabulary word for a beard, with "leah", wood, glade, clearing, hence, "Beard's wood". *Early recordings of the name include the marriage of Jese Beardsle and Edward Weze on February 26th 1575, at Carlton by Market, Bosworth, Leicestershire, and the marriage of Joan Beardsley and Thomas Weston at Gedling, Nottinghamshire, on April 16th 1604.
  • William Beardsley, a mason, aged 30 yrs., was an early emigrant to New England, leaving London on the "Planter" in April 1635. A famous namebearer was Aubrey V. Beardsley (1872 - 1898), an English illustrator noted for his stylized black and white illustrations, especially for Oscar Wilde's "Salome".
  • The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Beardsley, which was dated November 28th 1573, marriage to Joane Ulsecroft, at Ashby De la Zouch, Leicestershire, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, known as "Good Queen Bess", 1558 - 1603.
  • Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Not Bardsley! {or at least not recently}

BARDSLEY

  • SOURCE: Location
  • USAGE: English
  • Meaning & History: From the name a village lying between Ashton-under-Lyne and Oldham, in the County of Lancashire, England. It means "Beornred's clearing" in Old English, Beornred being a given name meaning "warrior counsel".
A member of the Bardsley family tested and joined the Beardsley/Beardslee DNA project. His results show that the Bardsley and Beardsley/lee families share a common ancestor, BUT in the very ancient past, perhaps as many as 20,000 years ago. The similarities of spelling and sound of the surnames is interesting.
  • An interesting posting at Forebears 'Bardsley' (also noted above) suggests that 'Beardsley' may have derived from the name 'Bardsley'. Of this we have no proof, but the DNA link of Bardsley and Beardsley would suggest this to be true. If so, the Forebears site says that Bardsley is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Bardsley,' a parish between Ashton and Oldham, near Manchester.

Census Records

  • In citing Census Records:
Watch for enumeration errors, such as name variations.
Remember that humans were the input: dates and ages can be erroneous. The respondent may have had a memory lapse or poor recollection; the enumerator may have been hard of hearing, or simply transcribed what was told him in error.
It's best to avoid adding a link to an actual record, such as Ancestry.com or Familysearch.org. Why? Links can and often do change.
Provide the basic record info so that the record can be re-found, if necessary. Using References, the NARA (or similar)[3] citation should be shown, according to proper genealogical research convention. Researcher Nick Dann provides the following example:
  • 1870 US Census: Cleveland, Ward 7, Cuyahoga County, OH, 15 Aug 1870, Pg. 122 (Citation Footnote (using References): Year: 1870; Census Place: Cleveland Ward 7, Cuyahoga, Ohio; Roll: M593_1190; Page: 229B; Image: 462; Family History Library Film: 552689)
  • Sometimes Census records can have errors. The obvious is surname spelling. Patience will eventually get you to the record you're seeking. Sometimes one has to be creative, as in this example.
In this case, an enumerator wasn't listening closely. Mark Heber Beardsley (1874 – 1947) appeared correctly, or nearly so, in 1880, 1910, 1930, and 1940 Census’. However, it was difficult to find him or his family in a 1920 Census. By searching with just his and his wife’s given name, no surname, and a known location (Texas, in this case), the family did appear with the surname ‘Heber’, Mark’s middle name. As mentioned above, it must sometimes be remembered that the enumerator is also human. And so was the person the enumerator was interviewing.
An excellent example of what can happen in the transcription of enumerator errors, or the enumerator simply recording what the interviewee is telling him, can be found in a Footnote attached to Harry Markle Beardsley, in this case having to do with the birthplace of his parents.
  • What happened to the 1890 Census? It was lost in a fire!
See The Fate of the 1890 Population Census
and Wikipedia; 1890 Census
